Summary
A book author is a good writer who can write quality creative content in their own style. They know about hiking and hiking trails in the proposed or revised book, and have a thorough understanding of the target audience. The book project manager, author, and editor can decide to shift various responsibilities to the author to better utilize everyone’s skills and interests.
Responsibilities
- Submit a proposal for a new book to the Publications Committee including type of book and a sample chapter or request that a new edition of a previously published book be prepared. The proposal must include an initial marketing plan.
- Sign author agreement
- Research and write text as in proposal, adhering to the style sheet for that publication
- Information about a park which can include history of the park
- Hike or trail descriptions
- Sidebars
- Research and write for each chapter
- Driving directions and parking lots
- GPS coordinates
- Public transportation access
- Park contact information
- Permitted and suitable uses - dogs, bikes, horses, accessibility, x country skiing
- Obtain quality photographs for the book and the front cover
- Supply marked up maps to cartographer
- Write the author’s message which includes thanking volunteers who worked the minimum number of hours on the book and write thank you letters to the above volunteers
- Write material for back of book cover
- Cooperatively develop and execute a marketing plan, especially giving talks to promote it.

- Collaboration with book editor, project manager, photographer, and cartographer
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Organizational skills
Time Commitment: 5-20 hours per week during course of project which can take ~3-5 years for a first edition
